Medical Weight Loss in Newport Beach, CA: Root-Cause, Doctor-Supervised

You already know the standard advice: eat less, move more, stay consistent. Maybe you have followed it for years. You plan your meals, you exercise, you watch portions, and the scale barely moves. Or it moves, and then everything comes back the moment you stop a plan that was never livable in the first place.

Often other things have shifted too: energy, sleep, appetite, digestion or your cycle. When that happens, weight is usually a signal worth investigating.

At Etara Wellness, medical weight loss in Newport Beach starts with one question: what is making this hard for you? We look at insulin resistance, thyroid function, stress and cortisol, perimenopause and menopause, PCOS, gut health, and nutrient status. Then we build a plan around your results, with the focus on metabolic health, steady energy and protecting lean muscle.

Why your weight isn't moving, even when you're doing everything right

You may have heard that most diets fail. Usually that is because they were never designed around the person following them. Two people can eat almost the same way and get very different results, because metabolism, hormones, sleep, stress, medications and nutrient levels all shape how the body stores and uses energy.

A holistic weight loss approach takes those factors seriously. These are the ones we evaluate most often.

Insulin resistance

Insulin moves sugar out of your blood and into your cells, and it also tells the body when to store energy. With insulin resistance, the body needs more and more insulin to keep blood sugar in range. Fasting glucose can look perfectly normal for years while insulin is quietly working overtime.

For some people this pattern shows up as strong hunger, energy dips after meals, or weight that settles around the middle. Not everyone who struggles with weight has insulin resistance, but when your history points that way, fasting insulin and related markers can tell us a lot more than "eat less" ever will.

A thyroid problem your TSH test missed

Your thyroid sets the pace for much of your metabolism. TSH is a useful screening test, but on its own it shows only part of the picture. If you are dealing with weight changes along with fatigue, feeling cold, hair thinning, dry skin, constipation or cycle changes, we usually look further with a comprehensive thyroid panel:

  • TSH
  • Total T4 and total T3
  • Free T4 and free T3
  • Reverse T3
  • Thyroid antibodies: TPO antibodies and thyroglobulin antibodies

Looking at these together helps us see how well your body is producing thyroid hormone, converting it into its active form, and whether autoimmunity may be involved. You can read more on our hormone health page.

Cortisol and chronic stress

Stress is physical. Long periods of pressure, poor sleep or under-recovery change how your body releases cortisol across the day, and that rhythm affects appetite, cravings, energy, blood sugar, sleep quality, your immune system, your daily routines and food choices, and where the body tends to store fat.

Cortisol is rarely the whole explanation, but it is often overlooked. Testing your daily cortisol pattern (for example with the DUTCH test) shows whether it belongs in your plan.

Perimenopause and menopause

Many women tell me the habits that worked at 35 stopped working at 45. That is a real change. Shifts in estrogen and progesterone affect sleep, appetite, insulin sensitivity and body composition, and muscle becomes harder to keep. Another restrictive diet often misses what is actually going on. Supporting hormones, sleep and strength usually makes more of a difference. See our hormone health services for how we evaluate this stage of life.

PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome involves both hormones and metabolism. Higher androgens and insulin resistance often travel together, which can affect weight, cycles, skin and energy. If PCOS is part of your history, or your symptoms suggest it, we look at the metabolic and hormonal picture together instead of focusing on weight alone.

Gut inflammation and dysbiosis

Bloating, irregular bowel movements and abdominal discomfort are worth paying attention to, especially alongside fatigue or nutrient deficiencies. The gut affects how you absorb nutrients, how inflamed you are, and even how full you feel after a meal. When the history calls for it, a comprehensive stool analysis helps us decide whether the gut needs attention. Learn more on our digestive health page.

We test before we treat

This is the heart of weight-loss functional medicine and the biggest difference from a one-size-fits-all program. Nobody at Etara Wellness starts on the same diet, supplement or medication by default. Your history and symptoms decide what we evaluate, and your results decide what we do.

Depending on your situation, testing may include:

  • Metabolic markers: fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HbA1c and a lipid panel, to evaluate blood sugar control and insulin resistance
  •  Comprehensive thyroid panel: TSH, total T4, total T3, free T4, free T3, reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies (TPO, thyroglobulin)
  • Sex hormones: estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-S and SHBG, timed to your cycle when relevant
  • Cortisol rhythm: the DUTCH dried urine test, which maps cortisol across the day along with hormone metabolites
  • Nutrient status: vitamin D, B12, ferritin and iron studies, and broader micronutrient testing when indicated
  • Inflammation and general health: hs-CRP, a complete blood count and a comprehensive metabolic panel (liver and kidney function)
  • Gut health: comprehensive stool analysis, such as the GI-MAP, when digestive symptoms are part of the picture
  • Body composition: tracking muscle and fat over time, so progress is measured by more than the scale

We do not test for the sake of testing. Each result should answer a question that changes your plan. Our functional lab testing page explains the panels in more detail.

Is this program right for you?

Our holistic weight loss program is a good fit if you:

  • Have been consistent with food and exercise and are still not seeing change
  • Have lost and regained weight several times
  • Notice weight changes along with fatigue, poor sleep, digestive symptoms or hormonal shifts
  • Have PCOS, insulin resistance, a thyroid condition, or are in perimenopause or menopause
  • Want an individualized plan, with or without medication, and someone to adjust it with you over time

This program is not the right fit if you:

  • Have an active eating disorder or are in recovery from one. You deserve specialized eating-disorder care first, and we are happy to help you find it.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding, or trying to conceive in the near future (we can support you in other ways during this time)
  • Want to lose a set amount of weight quickly for an event
  • Are looking for a prescription only, without evaluation or follow-up
  • Have symptoms that need urgent or emergency care

Your treatment options

Functional medicine for weight loss works best when it covers the whole process, from preparation to long-term maintenance.

Before anything begins, we look at what may be working against you: micronutrient deficiencies, inflammation, detoxification pathways, hormone balance, blood sugar, sleep, gut health and your current medications. During the active phase, we adjust nutrition, movement and any treatment based on how your body responds. After that comes maintenance, which is just as important. Here we focus on keeping your results without rebounding, protecting lean muscle, staying well nourished and handling any side effects, so the progress you made has a real chance to last.

For some people the foundation is nutrition and lifestyle; for others, medication is a useful tool, and often it is a combination. We decide together, based on your results and goals.

Root-cause protocol without medication

Medication is not required for everyone. Naturopathy for weight loss uses a naturopathic, integrative approach built on your lab results: clinical nutrition matched to your metabolism, a movement plan you can sustain, sleep and stress support, and targeted nutrient or botanical support where it may help. If testing shows a thyroid, hormonal or gut issue, that becomes part of the plan from the start.

The aim is a foundation you can live with long term, instead of another list of foods you are not allowed to eat.

Doctor-supervised GLP-1 therapy

GLP-1 and GLP-2 medications have changed weight care for many people. They can help regulate appetite and blood sugar, but they are not right for everyone and work best as part of a complete plan.

In collaboration with your primary care provider, before recommending a GLP-1, we review your health history, current medications, potential risks and benefits, and your goals. If it is a good fit, you get regular follow-up, dose adjustments, and support with side effects, along with nutrition and strength guidance. We also plan for maintenance from day one, because what happens after the medication matters as much as what happens during it.

Protecting muscle, not just losing weight

A lower number on the scale does not automatically mean better health. When people lose weight, some of that loss can be lean mass, not just fat. Muscle supports strength, balance, blood sugar control and metabolism as you age, so it is worth protecting.

That is why holistic weight management at Etara Wellness includes adequate protein, resistance training suited to your level, a sensible pace of change, and body-composition tracking. Our goal is to help you feel stronger and have more energy, with better metabolic markers to show for it.

How the program works: four phases

Your plan should change as your body changes. Timelines below are typical and vary from person to person.

  1. Understand (first visit). We go through your health history, symptoms, weight history, lifestyle, medications and any previous labs, in person in Newport Beach or by telehealth anywhere in California.
  2. Evaluate (about 1 to 3 weeks). We order the tests that make sense for you. Most blood work returns within days; specialty tests such as the DUTCH or a stool analysis can take up to a few weeks.
  3. Treat (roughly the first 3 months). We review your results together and start your individualized plan: nutrition, movement, sleep and stress support, targeted supplements, medication when appropriate, or a combination. Regular follow-ups let us adjust as we go.
  4. Maintain (ongoing). We retest where useful, protect lean muscle, and set up habits and check-ins that help you keep your progress over the long term.

What results to expect, and how fast

No one can honestly promise a specific number of pounds in a specific number of weeks. Your response depends on your starting point, health conditions, medications, sleep, activity and how your body reacts to treatment.

Many people notice changes in appetite, cravings, energy or sleep before the scale moves much. Lab markers are usually rechecked after a few months, and body composition and strength tend to change more gradually. Steady progress you can keep is worth more than a fast drop that does not last.

What's included and how pricing works

Because no two plans are the same, cost depends on what you actually need. Care may include your initial consultation, lab testing, follow-up visits, nutrition and lifestyle guidance, and medication management when indicated. Before you commit to anything, we explain what we recommend, what is included and what any additional costs would be, including lab fees. No surprises.

Med spa vs weight loss clinic vs naturopathic doctor

If you are searching for a weight loss clinic in Newport Beach, you will find several kinds of providers. Each can be the right choice for a different goal. The main difference is how much time goes into finding out why the weight is there in the first place.

Patient results

Every patient starts from a different place, so we do not present one person's results as a promise for anyone else. Instead, we track what changes for you: energy, appetite, sleep, strength, lab markers and body composition, alongside weight. Individual results vary.

Meet Dr. Rasha El Naggar, MD, MBiotech, ND

I trained first as a medical doctor at Ain Shams University in Cairo, then earned an MS in Biotechnology at Johns Hopkins University and my naturopathic doctorate at Bastyr University. Today I am a licensed naturopathic doctor in California, with more than 18 years of experience in health and medicine.

My path into naturopathic medicine was personal. I spent about three years with an illness no one could explain, and I know how it feels to be told your labs are "normal" when you do not feel normal. That experience shapes how I practice naturopathic medicine for weight loss: I listen first, test carefully and build the plan around you.

Naturopathic doctors complete a four-year accredited doctoral program with the same biomedical foundation as conventional medical training, including biochemistry, physiology, pathology and pharmacology. On top of that comes in-depth training in clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, functional lab interpretation and lifestyle medicine, followed by national board exams. As a naturopathic doctor for weight loss, I use all of it, and I work alongside your other doctors whenever that serves you best.

I see patients in person in Newport Beach and by telehealth across California, in English and Arabic. Read more about Dr. Rasha.
